Swarm Intelligence UNU Takes Over Reddit, And It’s Terrifying

On Wednesday, the artificial (but human-powered) “hivemind” called UNU hosted a Reddit AMA session, and the results are just a little bit creepy.

“You might have heard about me because I’ve been challenged by reporters to make lots of predictions,” UNU said.

“For example, Newsweek challenged me to predict the Oscars (link) and I was 76% accurate, which beat the vast majority of professional movie critics. TechRepublic challenged me to predict the Kentucky Derby and I delivered a pick of the first four horses, in order, winning the Superfecta at 540 to 1 odds.

No, I’m not psychic. I’m a Swarm Intelligence that links together lots of people into a real-time system – a brain of brains – that consistently outperforms the individuals who make me up.”

UNU's "swarm intelligence" technology, which seeks to multiply the thinking power of individual brains, correctly predicted the 2015 Kentucky Derby with astonishing accuracy.

One user asked “Will a great power war erupt within the next fifteen years?” UNU responded simply with “YES.”

Another asked “Will we see world war 3 within the next 50 years?” This time, UNU said “MAYBE”. Phew, got a maybe!

After that, the bad news just kept coming.

Reddit User: “Voter turn out will be driven most by support for a candidate or dislike of a candidate?”

UNU: “DISLIKE OF A CANDIDATE”

Reddit User: “What are the chances that the United states ends the war on drugs by 2020?”

UNU: “0%”

Damn. And we had so much hope for the future.

It wasn’t all doom and hivemind gloom. When asked “Will a manned Mars mission take place in the next 3 decades?” UNU responded with a resounding “YES”.
