Nowadays, young people change relationships too often, what with all the dating sites and other trends making them less tolerant of their significant other’s flaws in pursuit of a “perfect” relationship. Hence, they might want to take their cues from a Japanese couple where the woman got stricken with amnesia and the man had to make her fall in love with him again.
Now, that’s something you don’t see every day and no– the man’s name is not Adam Sandler nor is the woman Drew Barrymore. The two were actually featured in a Japanese reality television show called TBS Yume Special. The woman, named Maruyama, 24, was in a happy relationship with Li– the two were even set to get married:
Trouble struck when Maruyama was on her way to work one day riding her bicycle. She got hit by a car. The injuries she sustained from the accident gave her severe memory loss, a.k.a. amnesia. It was so bad, she lost memories of her friends, boyfriend, her scheduled marriage, and even her family. In fact, she didn’t even know what the word “family” meant.
“I don’t remember what I look like. So I look in the mirror and tell myself, ‘Oh, this is my face.’ What I do remember is what my body remembers. For example, when you use the restroom, I can do that. The most helpful was I remembered how to use my cellphone,” said Maruyama. It was also not clear when she will regain lost memories or the same function, as per her doctors.
Most people would probably give up on her and leave it to the experts. However, Li was probably not like most people. He was patient with Maruyama even if they had to postpone the marriage due to her amnesia. So, in a true Adam Sandler fashion, Li reintroduced Maruyama to their relationship day by day with the help of pictures and their relationship tokens.
“You may have lost your memories, but we can make new ones,” said Li to her. Li did work hard again every day to make Maruyama fall in love with him again. Meanwhile, Maruyama was advised to keep a diary of her daily life since she still has trouble remembering even new things.
After reading how dedicated Li has been in making her fall in love again, Maruyama eventually proposed to Li one day, and they finally got married. On a final note, Maruyama said, “Because of my amnesia, I have the chance to fall in love with him again. No matter how many times I lose my memory, I believe I will always fall in love with him.”
