Contracts and documents are crucial to understanding whatever legal obligations you’re dragging your name into. The problem is, they were made to be boring and most people avoid them entirely– a troublesome decision. One woman, however, took the time to read one mundane contract’s fine print and as a result? She was rewarded with $10,000.

Self-proclaimed nerd Donelan Andrews is one fortunately meticulous woman. She makes it a habit to always read fine print whenever she is presented with a document. So when her travel insurance agency presented her with paperwork, she read ALL of it. To her surprise, it wasn’t all just a legal jumble of words, there was something different about it.

“If you’ve read this far, then you are one of the very few…customers to review all of their policy documentation,” said the fine print in the contract. It then gave Andrews an email address saying that the first person to send a message to that address gets $10,000. So, Andrews did just that and got 10 grand easy– it was not an advanced April Fools prank.

Turns out, it was a secret “Pays-to-Read” campaign launched by a company called Squaremouth. Squaremouth apparently initiated the said campaign to make it a point that reading contracts and fine prints are important… and rewarding too. Here’s Andrews with her winnings:

We understand most customers don’t actually read contracts or documentation when buying something, but we know the importance of doing so. We created the top-secret Pays to Read campaign in an effort to highlight the importance of reading policy documentation from start to finish,” explained Squaremouth.

So, not only is Andrews safely insured in her travels, but she also now has hefty pocket money for it, all because she read the contract’s fine print. Well, it certainly pays to read, literally.
