Staying fit or having a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) can be quite hard for certain people with their lifestyles and genetic predispositions. However, that doesn’t mean you should avoid it like the plague, and it just so happens that one fat sex therapist is making it out as such. She even likened fitness training and dieting to Nazism.
Sonalee Rashatwar from Philadelphia, US recently did a two-hour fat acceptance lecture at St. Olaf College, Minnesota. What made her talk stand out was some bold claims where stated dieting is sexual assault and fitness training is a white supremacist tool while being fat is healthy. Rashatwar describes herself as a social worker and a sex therapist.
“I truly believe that a child cannot consent to being on a diet the same way a child cannot consent to having sex. I experience diet culture as a form of assault because it impacts the way that I experience my body,” she claimed. She seemingly dismissed the many studies about the benefits of fitness training and proper diet as well as the negative effects of obesity and a poor diet.
“We should be critical of the use of science and the production of knowledge to continue promoting this idea that certain bodies are fit, able, and desirable… is it my fatness that causes my high blood pressure, or is it my experience of weight stigma? Fatphobic… often actually eugenic science… eugenic science is Nazi science,” she added.
To top off her argument, she linked the Christchurch shooter‘s Islamophobic massacre to his love for fitness, since he did fitness training. As expected, Rashatwar received significant negative feedback online due to her speech and perhaps her general attitude towards fitness training and medical science.
What do you think of Rashatwar’s war against fitness training? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
