Let’s be honest. Social media is routinely abused.
The nature of social media is such that popular figures can reach and interact with their fan base in an unprecedented way: as themselves. Additionally, businesses can use sites like Twitter and Facebook to continuously engage with their customers. Social media has made politics more transparent than ever before, and though we’re not quite there yet (what with even more disinformation and a veritable deluge of contradictory facts), it’s a step in the right direction. Heck, it helped a guy nobody ever heard of win the chair of President four years back.
But there’s a price: From innocent flub to outright scandal, we see everything. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Though to be fair, celebrities, athletes, businesses, brands and politicians don’t really abuse YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. any more than the rest of the world. Their abuses are just far more visible. Some of these famous social media abuses have ruined careers (while some have arguably made them), and some have actually yielded positive results.
It’s all below in a fun infographic by MDG Advertising detailing the worst social media blunders of all time. Check it out and let us know what you think! Also, are there any famous social media flubs that didn’t make the cut? Sound off!
Thanks for sharing this infographic. I used these social media scandals as examples in an article I wrote for CybercultureGallery.com.
