Hurricane Sandy has been all over the news lately and took Twitter, as well as other platforms, by storm. Today, the official Twitter account shared some interesting details about the Superstorm, including just how many talked about it.
In just a six day period from October 27th to November 1st, over 20 million tweets were sent out with the terms “sandy,” “hurricane,” #sandy, or #hurricane. Twitter was a vital part of keeping in touch with friends and family, as well as sharing details about the storm in real-time.
In New York, mobile usage peaked around 9 PM on October 29th, the night of the storm, particularly around the time that the ConEd power plant had an explosion. Compared to two days prior, mobile usage more than doubled.
The Red Cross continues to be a great help to those who were affected, and from October 27th to October 30th, Twitter mentions of The Red Cross increased by 30 times.
Mentions of the word “donate” are at a 180-day peak and “donate blood” is at a 365-day peak. Search continues to be a popular tool for users to find out what’s happening as it happens, and on October 29th, 20 percent of all total search queries were related to Sandy.
Twitter remains the most popular tool for live events and goes to show that even when people are worlds apart, they can easily connect with others.
