For a lot of immigrants, the coveted U.S. citizenship is their key to success and a better life in the Land of the Free. Hence, they work hard in attaining them and even go through inhumane immigration policies for a chance at a better life. There, they are going to be judged worthy or not by Americans, the irony is, most of these “Americans” will probably fail the U.S. citizenship test.

Apparently, two out of three U.S. citizens you see in America today will fail the said citizenship test– that’s regardless of racial or ethnic background. A study conducted by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and research firm Lincoln Park Strategies has shown that only about 1/3 of Americans will actually pass the U.S. citizenship test, that’s only about 33 percent of the population.

The said test was based on the 100 civics questions that immigrants need to answer correctly before getting approved. Of course, the questions involved political things like “What is an amendment?” “The House of Representatives has how many voting members?” and “When is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms?” If you fail to answer all of those and you are American, well, bad news, the test is loaded with similar questions.

Needless to say, the test results were disappointing, as iterated by Woodrow Wilson Foundation President Arthur Levine since less than 50 percent of the subjects passed. Granted, they are not working toward being a U.S. citizen, meaning less pressure. Still, some of the questions should be stock knowledge for a lot of people, especially those about rights. Levine also couldn’t help but feel alarmed since results for the midterm elections for the U.S. is less than a month away and only a third of the population seems to know how the country works.
