Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic freefall from the edge of space broke a record for the “live stream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube,” according to the video-sharing website.
At its peak, the daredevil’s record-setting jump had more than 8 million concurrent live streams, according to YouTube’s blog post. The jump was broadcast over Red Bull’s YouTube channel.
Baumgartner, an Austrian diver, had already set an online record prior to the space jump when more than 7 million people watched him on YouTube at one time. The number continued to climb until it reached 8 million. Baumgartner also broke non-digital records on Sunday as well. Mashable tells us that Baumgartner broke the record for highest jump from a platform (128,100 feet), the longest distance freefall (119,846 feet) and maximum vertical velocity (833.9. mph or Mach 1.24) making him the first human being ever to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft.
The existing record for longest freefall time is 4 minutes and 36 seconds, set by Joe Kittinger in 1960. Baumgartner’s freefall time was roughly 4:18 before he pulled his chute.
