A pair in Australia have been freed from a swamp infested with crocodiles after they concocted a crafty way to make themselves known to latent rescuers.
The coupled managed to spark fires, but then inscribed ‘HELP’ in large letters in the mud. Colen Nugit and Shantelle Johnson were on an endearing, amorous fishing trip in Australia’s Northern Territory around Keep River National Park. Whilst they were wandering about, calamity hit. Their sports utility vehicle – called a ‘Ute’ by the Aussies – got stranded in a pile of mud. They detected croc tracks on the ground and figured that the most efficient course of action was to make themselves noticeable to any party searching for them, then hide in their vehicle.
After spending 26 hours out in the wild, the pair and their pooch Ace were ultimately rescued by a search team. Speaking to local news, Colen stated: “We were stuck on the marshland and we were right next to saltwater. Earlier that day we saw two, three croc tracks – they were about five, six meters long. We stayed in the car the first night and then we saw the water rising. We grabbed everything and took it about 20, 30 meters from the car.”
Johnson added: “We tried digging [the car out]and we tried putting stuff under the tires but it didn’t budge. We were pretty scared and worried, but we were just hoping someone would come.” Fortunately for them, somebody did come. They informed their families where they were headed to, and when they didn’t return the alarm was sounded. Their fires, as well as their sign, brought the rescuers along in the nick of time. Colen furthered: “When they [the rescuers] came a bit lower to the ground, we jumped out of the car and started to wave them down. It was overwhelming, emotional yeah … we were pretty happy that we’d made it.”
