Twitter was full of conversations yesterday surrounding the 2012 election, and according to new data, 31.7 million tweets were posted. This was one of, if not the biggest single day event, that Twitter has experienced and also lead to some very big accomplishments.
Shortly after news outlets announced that Barack Obama had won enough electoral votes to be re-elected and was far ahead of Mitt Romney, he posted a photo of himself hugging his wife Michelle Obama with the text, “Four more years.” That image alone was the most retweeted in history.
At this time, it has almost 700,000 retweets and almost 250,000 favorites. Around the same time that the image was posted, Twitter saw a peak of 327,452 tweets per minute which far exceeds the previous record of 116,000 tweets per minute during the Olympics closing ceremony.
This was also the most tweeted about political event in history and will remain a tough one to beat. Aside from all the buzz, Obama also broke some records on his Facebook page. After sharing the same image he shared on Twitter, that post became the most liked ever on Facebook which currently stands at over 3.1 million likes.
Twitter played a big role in this year’s election and continues to grow as the place to talk about live events.
