The only thing the internet loves more than a good Bridezilla story is the tale of a terrible mother-in-law.
From the mom who wore a wedding dress to her son’s nuptials, to the woman who charged family members $21 to attend Christmas dinner, a quick Google search will bring up plenty of stories that will make you appreciate your own mother-in-law a hell of a lot more.
This latest story in particular will make you go “jeeeesh!”
A new mom and her husband thought they’d landed on the perfect name for their baby son, even choosing a unique spelling for the little one.
So, imagine the woman’s horror when she discovered the father of the child had put a different name on their son’s birthday certificate – at the suggestion of his mother.
In a letter to Care and Feeding, Slate’s advice column, a woman with the username Mamabear shared how she realised her husband had secretly given the boy a different name.
The woman wrote: “Dear Care and Feeding, my son is two months old, and I just discovered my husband spelled our son’s middle name as ‘Finlay’ instead of ‘Finley’ on all his legal documentation.
” I, of course, am furious, because I told him I was fine with the middle name but it had to be spelled Finley – and he agreed before our son was ever born.”
Apparently, the woman became suspicious when her mother-in-law sent the baby a Christmas card with the wrong spelling.
However, she only realised that his name change was legal while filing the birth certificate away for safe keeping.
“He just let me keep believing for two months that our son’s middle name was spelt Finley when it legally isn’t,” she continued. “He says he regretted it as soon as the card came and has been afraid to tell me.
“Apparently his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this while I was asleep after my emergency C-section. Keep in mind she lives a few states away, so this was all over the phone.
“She tried to convince him to give our son a first name that I very much hated, saying that I would ‘get mad, but get over it’.
“My husband thought changing his first name was too much but apparently gave in to spelling his middle name the way his mom wanted. She thinks that ‘Finlay’ is more masculine that ‘Finley’.”
The woman then asked the agony aunt if she should confront her “manipulative” mother-in-law.
While the columnist agreed with Mamabear that her mother-in-law’s behavior was out of line, she advised against facing off with her husband’s parents and instead should place the blame on her man.
In her reply, she said: “”What in the entire f*** is up with your husband? He’s got to decide if you are his co-parent or if his mother is. And until he makes that decision, he can’t be trusted. Period.
“Purposefully changing the name of your child on a birth certificate behind your back is pretty close to a fireable offense if you ask me.
“I’m mad just reading about this. You and your kid deserve so much better.”
