After spending virtually her whole career refusing to discuss politics in any form, on Monday Taylor Swift broke her silence on Instagram. The “Aryan Goddess,” as her neo-Nazi supporters have dubbed her, has accidentally culminated an alt-right fan base in recent years, thanks to her blonde-hair, blue eyes, and angelic demeanor. However, her ascent to alt-right pop icon wasn’t helped by reluctance to talk about her political beliefs, and now she’s come out in support of democrats in her home state of Tennesee, her right-wing followers are not amused, to say the least (but we are).
One of those right-wingers to criticise the star’s political endorsement of democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper is Mike Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas. Whether it’s because she’s female, a pop star, or a female pop star who dares to disagree with him, the 63-year-old attempted to dismiss the singer’s views while highlighting his support for Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn.
So @taylorswift13 has every right to be political but it won’t impact election unless we allow 13 yr old girls to vote. Still with #MarshaBlackburn

However, Huckbee clearly underestimated the 28-year-old’s influence, as statistics show that voter registrations nationwide rose in the 24 hours after Swift shared her first ever political post.
“We are up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period since Taylor Swift’s post,” said Kamari Guthrie, Vote.org’s director of communications.
Considering 190,178 voters registered nationwide in the whole of September, that’s a pretty hefty figure. While in her native Tennesee, 2,144 new voters signed up in the 36 hours following Swift’s Instagram post, almost doubling the figures so far for October.
And Twitter is making sure Huckbee eats those statistics with a range of pithy tweets
