How Social Media Celebrated New Year’s Eve

Social media was buzzing with celebrations New Year’s Eve and a new infographic examines various trends from those celebrations. The infographic was put together by Viralheat and examined popular words or phrases including top resolutions.

Here were the most popular words or phrases in social media on the West Coast:

  • Happy New Year’s
  • East Coast
  • Las Vegas
  • San Francisco
  • New Resolution

Here were the most popular words or phrases on the East Coast:

  • New Year’s
  • New Year’s Kiss
  • Best Friend
  • Ball Drops
  • Fiscal Cliff

Fireworks were a big part of celebrations on New Year’s Eve and social media saw thousands of mentions throughout the night. At 11PM there were 12,668 mentions with the most mentions arriving around midnight with a total of 25,855.

The most used celebration words were “New Year’s” with a 76 percent positive sentiment and “champagne” following close behind at 71 percent positive sentiment. “Kiss” and “midnight” were close behind at 63 percent and 54 percent positive sentiment.

According to social media, here are the top goals and resolutions for 2013:

  • Lose weight – 35 percent
  • Eat healthy and quit smoking – 24 percent
  • Quit drinking – 16 percent
  • Save money and travel more – less than 1 percent
