If you’ve been anywhere on the Internet within this week, you’ve probably already seen the news that bacon and hotdogs, — and in general, our beloved processed meats — cause cancer. Does this mean we’ll have to kiss our annual hotdog-eating contest proposals and fast food Frankenstein creations goodbye? Are summer backyard cookouts and football season tailgating sessions a thing of the past?
I don’t know, but you may want to hold on and read this first, because who doesn’t love more information to throw you into a loop?
A recent study shows that certain varieties of hotdogs contain human DNA — and if you think you’re safe by going for its vegetarian counterpart, these purported vegan-friendly links contain a certain percentage of meat.

A study conducted by researchers from Clear Labs, a company that sets standards for food quality, sampled 345 different varieties of hotdogs and sausages from different brands and retailers. From Walmart, to Safeway, to Trader Joe’s, to Whole Foods, just a handful of the 75 brands and 10 retailers they sampled the meats from, assigning each brand a 100 score for the highest quality items.
Clear Labs tested each hotdog for hygenic issues and substitution. The results may leave you slack-jawed and astounded for a good few minutes.

So, what exactly does this mean for us consumers? What with the threat of these becoming the new “cancer sticks” to these new scientific findings about what goes into your favorite hotdogs? Perhaps one good way to approach it is to just be aware of the information, and to just eat what you want, and enjoy it with gusto. Life’s too short to worry about these things.
