Hurricane Sandy is ravaging the Eastern seaboard and in its wake users to various social networks have posted some pretty astonishing photos. There is just one problem, many of the photos are stock photos from other category-1 hurricanes and not those of Hurricane Sandy.
While many of the photos capture the breadth of a large scale hurricane they are hardly newsworthy for today’s East coast blitze.
Thankfully there are some sources that have decided to take it upon themselves to verify user photos, labeling them as fake or real. Here is a list compiled by Social Times:
1. The Atlantic will be sourcing, updating, and labeling its list of popular photos with big graphics that separate the real pictures from the fake ones.
2. The Tumblr blog Is Twitter Wrong is also keeping a running tally of phony images that are trying to pass for Sandy wreckage.
3. The Guardian is asking readers to help them document the fake photo phenomenon by using the hashtag #FakeSandy on Twitter.
Just keep in mind that citizen journalism is unchecked work and that we need to be careful what we believe for that very reason.
