As Hurricane Sandy makes its way on land, people are turning to social media for updates on the storm, as well as pictures of the destruction.
Twitter posted a blog on Monday to let users know how they can receive alerts from accounts on Twitter. They also offered free promotional tweets to FEMA, the Red Cross, the New York City’s Mayor’s Office and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to help get updates out more quickly.
In the blog post, Twitter outlined how to receive tweets via text messaging, even if you don’t have a Twitter account. All you need to do is text “follow [username]” to 40404 in the US, allowing you to follow FEMA and the American Red Cross.
You can also set text alerts from your computer, if you still have power and internet (or your smartphone if you do not). You can click the person’s name or avatar, then click on the person icon and select the option “turn on mobile notifications.”
The site’s full list includes accounts offering real-time updates on Super Storm Sandy in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.
Along with the more specific accounts per state, they also suggested following @NOAA, @FEMA, @craigatfema, @femaespanol, @readydotgov, @usNWSgov, @CNNEE, @femaregion1, @femaregion2, @femaregion3, @RedCross and @NHC_Atlantic.
