Facebook Gifts Allow You To Send Charities Money On Behalf Of Friends

Facebook Gifts have been around for several years and more recently introduced the ability to send friends physical gifts. Although the official event to announce that was cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy, the social network has rolled out the ability to now send money to charity on behalf of friends.

This is a great way to help out with a great cause while showing support for your friend whether it’s their birthday, engagement, or even just to do it.

Although Facebook has receives quite a bit of criticism over their advertising products and methods, one can’t deny that this new feature will help to send millions of dollars to charities.

While it undergoes testing, you’ll only be able send a maximum of $25 which is likely to change. From Product Manager Jared Morgenstern:

“We are especially pleased to be launching this test now – when so many people are looking for new ways to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, or assist those most in need around the holidays. With each charitable contribution on Facebook, you can choose which nonprofit you would like to support. Or if you don’t know which organization to choose, you can let your friend make the choice.”

You can choose from 11 non-profits to start with more coming soon. Here’s the complete list:

  • American Red Cross
  • Blue Star Families
  • Boys Girls Clubs of America
  • DonorsChoose.org
  • Girls Inc.
  • Kiva
  • LIVESTRONG
  • Oxfam America
  • RAINN
  • St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital
  • Water.org

Facebook Gifts isn’t available to everyone as it’s being rolled out gradually, however, if you do have access, when you send a friend a gift, they immediately get access as well.
