Cam Newton Weighs In On Kaepernick; Sounds Like Miss America Contestant

Colin Kaepernick made a lot of people mad a few days ago when he refused to stand during the national anthem. The intentional sit was his way of showing solidarity for the black community which he believes have been recently oppressed by the United States. Here’s Stephen Colbert explaining the controversy better than I ever could.

And the Kaepernick sit is a topic too hot for me to touch, but Cam Newton recently weighed in on Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the national anthem. And what he said made sense but in a round-a-bout sort of way.

Cam Newton seemed to dodge the question pretty well, but made a good point that we’re all equal. Even if his reasoning left something to be desired.

I don’t know when we put it on our athletes to play the role of political scientists. But it’s a bit out of their league. These, for the most part, are kids who barely had to go to class in college. Their entire lives have revolved around football. Are we really surprised that when you ask them to explain their theories on race relations?

While Cam Newton did used to be a little more vocal on the issues of race relations, he’s never been particularly well-spoken. Just watch this interview from him after the Panther’s Super Bowl loss.

And so the United States continues to battle the issue of race relations. And maybe we should look a little further than our star athletes.
