Are Corgis the Next Police Dogs?

Russian Police Are Testing Whether Or Not Corgis Are Cut Out For Bomb-Sniffing Duty.

The phrase “police dog” tends to conjure images of German Shepherds, Rottweilers, or even Labradors. Few of us imagine the stubby, chubby, fluffy breed known as the Corgi would be of any use to law enforcement. Yeah, that’s right: Corgis.

But Russian police forces are seriously considering training the breed to sniff out bombs and squeeze into tight spaces larger breeds might have trouble passing through.

“It is not certain that they will be able to join the ranks of service dogs, but even if they don’t the experiment will be interesting for everyone,” said Elena Haikova, head of Moscow’s canine unit. “We will try out the breed in search operations. We have two pups, one of whom is two months old, the other is six months old.”

Is this the new face of the Russian K-9 police unit? Russian authorities are testing whether or not the humble, short-legged Welsh corgi could be cut out for bomb-sniffing duty. They’re known to be affectionate, alert, cheerful, friendly, independent, intelligent, lively, loving, loyal, out-going, playful, protective, and social.

According to the website Pet Breeds, Corgis are “a medium purebred known for being affectionate, alert, cheerful, friendly, independent, intelligent, lively, loving, loyal, out-going, playful, protective, and social.”

“The most common colors for Pembroke Welsh Corgis are black, black and tan, blue, red, and white. To keep it healthy, it will need to get exercise regularly. Known to be multi-talented, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi participates in a wide variety of activities such as competitive obedience, guarding, and herding.”
