What does your political affiliation say about your grammar? A lot, according to a new study by Grammarly. The proofreading app decided to conduct an experiment wherein they ranked 2016 presidential candidates by their supporters’ grammar. The results won’t be surprising to some, but must come as a shock to others.
The result that stands out in particular is Donald Trump’s fanbase. The boorish, say-whatever-is-on-his-mind Republican candidate had the most grammatically incorrect fans. Lincoln Chafee, the barely-heard-of Democratic candidate, had the most grammatically correct supporters. Check out the chart below to see how everybody ranked:
Chafee and Jim Webb rank near the top, while grassroots favorite Bernie Sanders comes in close third. Martin O’Malley begins the downward trend for Democrats, while Hilary Clinton’s supporters tie with former businesswoman Carly Fiorina. It’s all downhill from there with the rest of the Republican candidates, but the numbers drop sharply between Ted Cruz and Trump. It seems Trump supporters don’t have a very good grasp of the English language.
The results look dire for Republican supporters, but it’s worth noting the data set contained a significant over-sample of Republican candidates. If you’ve seen the list of who’s running this election, you’ll have noticed how massive the GOP’s field is compared to that of the Democrats, who propose a more modest selection of presidential contenders. The graph below shows how well Republican and Democratic supporters’ grammar matched up against each other:
What do these numbers mean? Not much. Grammarly intended the study to be a “lighthearted look at how well the 2016 presidential candidates’ supporters write when they’re debating online.” Even still, the numbers don’t look good for Trump supporters. Sorry, guys. Try installing a more robust spellchecker.
