In a Facebook post, the Massachusetts General Hospital announced the nation’s first genitourinary reconstructive (penile) transplant in the United States.
“Massachusetts General Hospital is making history today,” the post reads, “with the announcement of the nation’s first genitourinary reconstructive (penile) transplant.”
“The result of more than three years of research, a team of 30 physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, fellows and residents, worked to surgically graft the vascular and nerve structures. Patient Thomas Manning, 64, who had penile cancer that necessitated removal of his penis to cure the cancer, received the donation in early May.”
“Today’s announcement is a major milestone in the field of transplantation, one of which will give hope to those who suffer from serious genital injuries,” said Dr. Curtis Cetrulo of Mass General Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. “The entire transplant team has worked tirelessly to ensure that our patient is on a strong path to recovery, thanks in part to the gift of organ donation.”
The doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital detail the procedure in a news release titled “First Genitourinary Vascularized Composite Allograft (Penile) Transplant in the Nation Performed at Massachusetts General Hospital.”
“Today I begin a new chapter filled with personal hope and hope for others who have suffered genital injuries,” says the patient who received the transplant. “Particularly for our service members who put their lives on the line and suffer serious damage as a result.”
“In sharing this success with all of you, it’s my hope we can usher in a bright future for this type of transplantation.”
Alexandra Glazier, president and CEO of the New England Organ Bank, said the procedure was made possible by the donor family. “To this donor family, we offer our thoughts as they struggle with their loss and our humble thank you, deep appreciation and admiration for the humanity they showed,” Glazier said. “They wish the recipient to know that they feel blessed and are delighted to hear his recovery is going well and are praying that his recovery continues.”
