The website Fakers by Status People has claimed for a while now that many of Twitter’s accounts are fake because they have “few or no followers and few or no tweets. But in contrast they tend to follow a lot of other accounts.” However the website may have misjudged the average Twitter users if Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is correct.
Speaking at last nights opening for OpenCoSF’s kickoff reception the social networks CEO claimed that 40% of Twitter users choose to follow others and read their news, personal messages and other information while not tweeting any of their own messages.
Essentially 40% of Twitter users look at Twitter as a news, business, and life feed more than a way to interact directly with their friends, family, co-workers, politicians, celebrities and other users.
Understanding how spam effects a network the size of Twitter has been a challenging task as bots, paid to post and other spam programs often run rampant, especially in the early days of a network when the technology to slow the spread of fake accounts is not necessarily available to the firm.
