Everything is Awesome with this new play set from Lego. Why? Because Representation matters, that’s why.
The newest play set Lego has rolled out features new figures — a mom in a corporate suit, a teen in a wheelchair with an assistance dog, and a hipster-y dad pushing a pram with a baby in it. This dad has got the look down to that trimmed beard and lumberjack shirt.
Indeed, what a time to be alive.
Lego is making a move forward in keeping up with the times. “We need to stay in tune with the world around us,” Soren Torp Laursen, president of Lego Systems, shares with Fortune magazine. “We aren’t responding to demand from anyone. We are trying to portray the world around us and listen to our consumer base.”
Think it’s too soon? Don’t be too sure nor pish at this just yet. Stay-at-home dads are cheering for this new figure. No matter how tiny it is, it’s a big sign of representation for the. It shows kids that families like these do exist –they’re normal, accepted, and celebrated. Mum goes to work, Dad stays at home and takes care of the kids, and everyone wins.

According to the Pew Research Center, The number of fathers choosing to stay at home to tend to the household chores and children has doubled since 1989. Opinion is divided — some believe the choice emasculates men; others fully believe it makes them become better men. Some stay-at-home dads are so over the insults or unhelpful comments they hear, and would not like nothing more than to just be left alone and be happy helping their wives and caring for the kids.
