The 2011 Superbowl, in comparison, only saw 4,064 tweets per second.

Japan helped Twitter set the previous TPS record, when the country celebrated the new year by sending out 6,939 tweets per second.

Twitter announced earlier this month that users were now sending an average of 200 million tweets per day. Twitter also just reached 200 million users in just five years time.
