Stress we’ve learned is detrimental for your health, however it struck one woman so poorly she literally went deaf. After Chen visited a specialist throat, nose and ear doctor (ENT) she was diagnosed with an ailment called ‘reverse-slope hearing loss‘.

This disorder impedes Chen’s ability to hear sounds at low frequency, such as an ordinary grown man’s voice.

“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn’t hear him at all,” said Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, The ENT specialist at Qianpu Hospital.

This sort of low frequency hearing loss is said to be triggered by a number of various things such as Meniere’s disease, Mondini dysplasi, Wolfram Syndrome 1 and sudden hearing loss. Though, the doctor explained Chen may have formulated the condition due to stress and fatigue after Chen stated she’d been losing sleep and getting stressed over working too much.

Anyone who has low frequency hearing loss, typically, can’t hear sounds that have a frequency of 2,000 Hz or below. Any damage to inner ear hair cells can affect a person’s hearing because the cells make the sound journey from the outer ear to the brain.

Low frequency hearing loss can too be extremely dangerous for persons, as it can impact their ability to hear things like the low hum of an approaching vehicle.
