In a divorce settlement, a millionaire was ordered to pay $5.09 million to his ex-wife and then sued her after he found out the 3 kids he raised were not his.
Life has a way of taking unanticipated and comical twists and turns at times. That is potentially, what this father was thinking.
The co-founder of moneysupermarket.com, 55-year-old Richard Mason, never would have fathomed that the three boys he raised weren’t his. However, a medical diagnosis unveiled the startling fact that the twin 19-year-olds and the 23-year-old could not be his.
3 years ago, Mason was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The disease is genetic and when it takes place in men, they are incapable to have children. A DNA test was then administered and it was uncovered that the kids were not his. He was devastated.
“You don’t know what’s real and what isn’t – it’s as if I’m living in The Matrix,” Mason told reporters. “Someone says to you, ‘All that you know and everything you thought to be solid and true is not real, and never did exist. You are not a father, you are not able to have kids, your name will not continue.’”
He didn’t unmask the truth until he and Kate (his ex-wife) had been divorced for 10 years! Once the truth was pinpointed, Mason sued his ex-wife for paternity fraud. “I still see what the boys are doing on Facebook and it’s heart-wrenching because we saw the graduation of the eldest on there, but I wasn’t invited,” he added.
Mason was triumphant in his lawsuit and was awarded $318,250 (£250,000). His ex was having an affair during their marriage and it’s presumed that the same man fathered all 3 boys. He furthered, “I just didn’t know who I was any more. It’s like suffering a bereavement. In an instant, I discovered I didn’t really have any children. You begin to question everything you thought you knew when such a fundamental pillar of your life is suddenly removed.”
