Whoops: Sikh Temple Vandalized with Anti-Muslim Message

Vandals sprayed threatening anti-Muslim graffiti on a Sikh temple in Thornaby, UK—apparently unaware that Sikhism is a South Asian religion unrelated to Islam. The vandalized wall reads “Die Muslims, die” and “Death to Allah”. They also wrote “white power” and a slew of other religiously-themed profanities. This comes a few weeks after thieves targeted the Sikh community center, stealing food and clothes.

Peter Brennan, one of the town’s local committee members, reported the offensive graffiti to the town Council after a Sikh committee member brought it to his attention.

“This is absolutely disgusting,” he said, “people need to be aware of this sort of madness. The vandals were obviously ignorant but the hate was real. The temple and community center is a well respected part of our town and community. This attack in no way reflects the warm feelings felt towards the Sikh community in Thornaby.”

Thanks to a speedy response from local police, the graffiti has been cleaned off the temple wall. Residents are still on the lookout for the vandals.
