Vine Beats Instagram As Top Social App After A Week On Android

vine app

Everyone who thought Vine would never beat out simple image sharing apps and services like Instagram (myself included) has been proven wrong. After just a week on Android, Vine has taken the crown as the top social app.

A week ago, the Vine app had hit 13 million downloads just before its launch on Android. Now, Vine has reached the top of Android’s charts to become the top social app and the No. 4 free app on Google Play. Instagram, Vine’s biggest competitor, is No. 5.

More good news for Vine: Nick Bilton of the New York Times noticed that there are more Vine shares on Twitter than Instagram for the first time ever. The evidence is yours, posted below in a graph from Topsy Analytics.

But why is Vine so popular? Jordan Crook of TechCrunch theorizes that Vine users “want to share on Twitter because the Vine ecosystem is still growing, and those users want to ensure that their creation gets as many views from friends as possible.”

That’s definitely a persuasive point, but I can’t help but wonder if Instagram’s late 2012 decision to stop allowing content to be shown in Twitter cards has something to do with the decrease in the app’s popularity. Vine, as an official arm of Twitter, obviously doesn’t have that problem.

You can download the Vine app at The App Store and Google Play. Which do you prefer, Vine or Instagram?

  1. I wonder what will be next. I admit it.. I haven't been on Instagram as much and find Vine rather amusing. Especially the hot picks. A good laugh here and there! 🙂
