A video of airplane passengers singing “I Believe I Can Fly” is going viral on YouTube and social sharing sites this Tuesday, but the story behind the clip will leave you wondering how these flyers managed to keep their spirits high despite the sweltering conditions inside the plane.
Published on June 9, 2013, the video titled “Allegiant flight 592 delirious from heat” has gone viral with almost 200,000 views as of this posting. Some background for the clip:
Passengers aboard Allegiant Airlines flight 592 from Las Vegas to Phoenix were stuck on the tarmac for hours with no snacks, water or A/C. According to the video’s description, flight attendants excused themselves around the 5-hour mark, and the passengers, hopeless, banded together in song.
That song was R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly,” which was played by one passenger on a portable stereo. Those on the airplane joined in singing the tune, trying to ignore the uncomfortable temperature (it hit 112 outside) which even caused some to pass out.
Allegiant said that they were both sorry for the delay and grateful that the passengers managed to keep their spirits up. They offered credit vouchers to those on board. No word on complimentary peanuts, though.
