How do things change in the social networking industry when “friends with benefits” alter their relationship?

For example, did you notice that Instagram, once bosom-buddies with the popular microblog Twitter, stopped allowing its content to be viewed within Twitter cards? This happened at the end of 2012, and marked the end of the once beneficial relationship between the two.

Now, Instagram users on Twitter can only share a link to their content, which re-directs curious clickers back to … Instagram.

What went wrong between Instagram and Twitter? How have the two been affected by the relationship shift? Who has benefited? Who has been hurt?
