British Olympic diver Tom Daley came out on Monday in an emotional YouTube video he tweeted to his fans. The 19-year-old explained in the video that he’s in a relationship with another man.
Daley began by explaining about his “roller coaster” life the past few years, including losing his dad to cancer in 2011 and winning an Olympic medal the next year. He added that he wanted to be honest with his fans, including about his relationships. He stated, “Come spring, this year, my life changed. Massively. When I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy.”
The Olympian stopped short of calling himself gay or bisexual. Instead, he explained, “Of course, I still fancy girls. But I mean, right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier. It makes me feel safe and just really does feel right.” He went on to say, “I think people are going to make a big deal of this. I mean, is it a big deal? I don’t think so.”
But given the media interest in the news, plus the more than 1 million views the video received in less than a day, his announcement is a bigger deal to the outside world than it is to Daley.
Most of the comments Daley has received have been supportive, and the diver acknowledged them on his Twitter account.

As for how the announcement will change his plans for the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio, Daley commented, “I’m still Tom. I still want to win an Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I’m still as motivated as ever to do that.”
Got something I need to say…not been an easy decision to make, hope you can support me! 🙂 https://t.co/oOrDEiChGd
