It seems like a scene from a circus: a pair of llamas riding in a taxi. While it looks like a hilarious sight, the llamas’ caretaker is receiving criticism for the animals choice of transportation.
In the Peruvian capital of Lima, Gisella Aponte makes a living by entertaining tourist with her pair of llamas. She says the work is very tiring on the animals and they must travel a far distance from home to where they work. So, instead of forcing the animals to exhaust themselves on a long journey, she did what we all do to help our work commute, she takes a taxi.
Recently, a video shot by a local man showing Aponte shoving the animals into a taxi was uploaded to YouTube, where many are criticizing Aponte’s actions. Many call it a form of animal abuse because the car is a very small space to cram the animals into. Aponte argues that since she does not own a car, a taxi is the only way to get to and from her work location.
“I make them work pretty hard and they are too exhausted to walk all the way home at the end of the day, and so am I,” Aponte said. “We spend all our time entertaining tourists so the last thing we want at the end of the day is a long trek home.”
