People are voluntarily getting intense sunburns to create designs on their skin. Even once the sunburn heals, the tanned skins will continue to display the design.
Many have taken to social media to show off their skin using #sunburnart and #tantattoo.
While we think it looks dumb, they are enough people that are attempting it that the U.S. Skin Cancer Foundation decided to speak out on the dangers of the trend. How about #skincancer?
The statement warned of the risk of skin damage, and even skin cancer.
“The Skin Cancer Foundation strongly advises the public to avoid sunburns at all costs. A sunburn is not only painful – it’s dangerous, and comes with consequences,” the organization explained. “”Sunburns cause DNA damage to the skin, accelerate skin ageing, and increase your lifetime skin cancer risk. In fact, sustaining five or more sunburns in youth increases lifetime melanoma risk by 80 per cent. On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns.”
While there have been followers of the risky trend, many are speaking out against it. Experts believe that the trend will quickly die out once people realize the risk.
