It’s inevitable. You partied too hard last and now you are paying big time. With a pounding headache, you search for a cure for your hangover woes. There are plenty of bizarre hangover treatments floating around. Some might work, while others were strange myths concocted by a group of creative alcoholics.
Thanks to some inspired drinkers, there is finally a hangover cure that you might enjoy. South Korea is Asia’s hardest drinking country, so it isn’t surprising that the hangover cure industry is worth around $125 million. The industry has introduced pills, cosmetics and even soups that promise to fix all that ails you. But, finally one new item is making hangovers quite delicious.
A South Korean convenience store chain is marketing a hangover-curing ice cream bar. The Gyeondyo-Bar is a grapefruit flavored ice cream bar with a bit of oriental raisin tree fruit juice. This strange raisin juice has been a Korean ingredient for hangover treatment since the 1600s. This ingredient isn’t just a passing fad, the 2012 Journal of Neuroscience discovered that raisin tree extract was successful in reducing the effects of intoxication when tested on lab rats.
The name Gyeondyo is also a nod to it’s rescuing properties. It literally translates to “hang in there.” The store chain Withme FS explained that the name “expresses the hardships of employees who have to suffer a working day after heavy drinking, as well as to provide comfort to those who have to come to work early after frequent nights of drinking.”
This product will do very well in South Korea. Studies show that the average citizen drinks more than 12 liters of booze. This high rate of excessive drinking has also caused billions of dollars lost in productivity, skyrocketing medical costs and early deaths.
The ice cream bar will only be available in South Korea, which means that the rest of the world needs to get on creating a delicious concoction like this. Or pop some Tylenol and call in sick. Whatever works for you.
