We’ve all been at that point where we’ve considered ditching Facebook, but, “I still want to keep in touch with my family,” is usually one of the excuses that keeps us using the popular social networking site with ever-shrinking privacy concerns.
Enter Rootsy, a recent (and private) social network start-up that allows on-the-fence Facebook quitters to have their cake and eat it too.
Developed by a group of seven entrepreneurs at tech incubator QLabs in New York City, Rootsy is a social networking site that limits your connections to family members only. Baby photos, reunion announcements, anything family-oriented that you don’t want to share on Facebook can be kept in the family. “People have their Facebook personality and are trying to create an image for themselves,” said one of the founders of Rootsy, Cezary Pietrzak. “We’re going for higher-value type of content.”
The site launched last Wednesday, and was created to answer the problem of decreased privacy on popular social networking sites. Rootsy allows the user to build their own digital family tree and contact family members.
Think of it as kind of an Ancestry.com meets Facebook, though the developers have stated that they’re not looking to become the next Ancestry (but a partnership isn’t out of the question, reports Mashable). The best part? Rootsy is free.
