Censorship, social justice and other political concerns aren’t the only things that might get your knickers in a twist in over the internet.
Facebook is used to raise “awareness” of many issues, often to the ire of the uninterested parties subjected to another’s pet causes. But if the cause is one that many can get behind, promoting a cause can affect change, however minor.
Case in point- a cottage cheese price fixing brouhaha in Israel. Prices of cottage cheese have nearly doubled in the country, and more than 75,000 Israelis have reportedly joined a Facebook page pledging to boycott the dairy product until prices become more manageable. (This shiksa can’t locate the specific page, but the rallying cry was reportedly, “Eight shekels for such a basic product? Don’t buy cottage cheese for a month!”)
Prices for cottage cheese- a staple during Shavuot, when dairy prices are common- did not formally drop. But the outrage did have some palpable effects for Israelis:
And the effort has apparently worked: Several supermarket chains announced specials on cottage cheese Tuesday, among them Rami Levy, Kim’at Hinam, and Supersol, which is offering a buy one-get one free deal for cottage cheese.
Deals for other dairy products have appeared as well. A spokesperson for one of the chains said that the protest page had gotten their attention, and that they would pressure manufacturers to lower prices on a permanent basis.
Do you belong to any protest groups on Facebook? Do you have a pet cause on the social network?
