A California resident visiting family in Florida had a startling wildlife encounter when a snake fell out of a banana tree and landed on his arm.
“The snake literally flew off the tree and wrapped around my arm. And I grabbed it and I threw it back into the bush,” Jake Collier, of San Francisco told reporters.
The 26-year-old Californian said he was visiting his in-laws’ household in Melbourne Beach when a snake suddenly dropped from a banana tree on the property about 10 p.m. and encircled around his arm.
Collier stated he was not sure if the snake had bit him, so he dialed 911 and was evaluated by emergency respondents, who deemed him OK.
“Sounds like the snake might have fallen and the guy was nice enough to break the snake’s fall,” Keith Winsten, executive director of the Brevard Zoo said. “I’m sure the snake appreciated that.”
Winsten claims the encounter was likely just as staggering for the serpent, and that the reptile was in all likelihood a non-venomous rat snake.
Rat snakes have a reputation of making unforeseen appearances in uncommon locations.
Collier said his in-laws elected to cut down the tree.
“If it’s going to become a hazard where a snake can jump out at you, I think it’s a good idea to take it down,” said Collier.
“My arm hasn’t turned black or blue or fallen off yet, so it’s OK.”
