Oh criminals. Stupid stupid criminals. Why would you post a shoplifting selfie? You do know that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites are public, right?
A woman in Illinois was arrested this week after she posted a shoplifting selfie to her Facebook account. The woman, 27-year-old Danielle Saxton, reportedly stole a dress from Mortie’s Botique.
Saxton was able to leave the store without being caught but then she decided to post photos of the dress on Facebook.
Kert Williams, co-owner of Mortie’s Boutique, also posted photos of the incident to Facebook. Williams used the store’s security camera to get an image of Saxton and then posted it to the store’s Facebook page.
Soon, people reported seeing the dress in one of Saxton’s photos. The police were alerted and Saxton was arrested for stealing a dress, a few shirts, and some jewelry.
Police Chief Shawn Talluto said: “We just had a description and a direction of travel, but when the social media aspect played into it, we were able to identify who it was. And by looking at the background of the photograph we were able to pinpoint where she was at.”
