Who replaced the American flags on top of the Brooklyn Bridge with two white flags? We don’t know who did it but we know who didn’t do it: The Bike Lobby.
The Bike Lobby, a parody Twitter account, claimed responsibility for the white flags on the Brooklyn Bridge earlier this morning. The tweet was picked up by the Associated Press and was soon reported as fact by several news outlets.
Earlier today we hoisted two white flags to signal our complete surrender of the Brooklyn Bridge bicycle path to pedestrians.

Most media outlets have corrected the mistake but not before the Bike Lobby publicly shamed them.
BWAHAHA! @NYDailyNews thinks @BicycleLobby is an actual thing. https://t.co/tHfsNkmgPp

We may pack it in. How on earth can we parody something that is beyond parody? pic.twitter.com/IPmk2Ko4bO

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. How many Daily News reporters does it take to not fact-check a story?

If you believe we’re for real, we have a bridge in Brooklyn we’d like to sell you.

Congratulations, Bike Lobby, you successfully fooled the media. You also angered Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
If flying a #whiteflag on the #BrooklynBridge is someone’s idea of a joke, I’m not laughing. We won’t surrender our public safety to anyone.

Political and social expression, whatever its message may be, has a place in our society, but not at the expense of others’ security.

The bike lobby wasn’t responsible for the white flags on the Brooklyn Bridge, but someone was. Authorities searched the bridge for bombs after the incident and are currently searching for those responsible for the prank. We’re guessing that they won’t be using Twitter as part of their investigation.
