It’s been 14 years since she got off the plane, but for Friends fans Ross and Rachel are still relationship goals. So, it may surprise you to know that TV’s most iconic couple were always meant to end up together.
“WE WERE ON A BREAK” is one of the show’s most-quoted lines – up there with “PIVOT” and “JOEY DOESN’T FOOD!” – but as it turns out, fans were responsible for Ross and Rachel’s split.
Speaking to the Metro ahead of London’s Friendsfest, executive producer Keven S. Bright explained that writers Martha Kauffman and David Crane always intended for Ross and Rachel to go the distance. Their relationship breakdown in the season three episode ‘The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break’ was thrown in to keep viewers on their toes.
“When [Ross and Rachel] was planned it wasn’t planned that way, that came a little bit later,” Bright said.
“It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for.”
The crew realised that although fans loved Ross and Rachel’s romance, the relationship was quickly going stale.
“We were well aware the audience wanted to keep them together but everything that was keeping them apart…” he continued.

“We realised when we got them together when the first kiss happened we go, “Wow, the air has kind of gone out of the balloon.”
The episode was followed by seven seasons of their on-again-off-again relationship, with the characters finally reuniting in the season 10 finale.
“I thought what Marta and David did, which was such a brilliant and brave move with their relationship,” Bright added.
“As soon as everyone got their wish the wish was taken away. It made it so much better when they did get together.”
