Police in Scarborough, Maine, saved a man’s life on Wednesday with the help of a Facebook post.
On the police station’s Facebook page a man in the United Kingdom alerted them to a possible suicide attempt by a Scarborough resident.
On its Facebook page the department writes: “Using social media, an internet chat room, and live video streaming we were able to locate the person who had threatened to harm themselves within minutes and got them the help they needed.”
Local law enforcement acknowledge that the Facebook page is not monitored 24/7 and that 911 is still the best method of contact.
Suicide is a big problem in Maine where it is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 35. Maine officials deal with one suicide every two days.
Here is the thank you post that was placed on the Scarborough Police Departments website following the life saving message.
