Pinterest Debuts ‘More Useful Pins,’ And You’re Going To Love Them

Pinterest more useful pins

Pinterest just launched “more useful pins,” which, if you’re a regular on the image-driven social network, is something you’ve probably been waiting for (even if you didn’t realize it).

In a post to their official blog, Pinterest software engineer Anna Majkowska details the new and improved pins launched today, which are more or less exactly what they sound like, but we’ll get into it a little bit more.

Essentially, Pinterest’s new pins help you learn more about the things that you like or re-pin on the site. If you see a recipe you like, a movie you want to stream, or even a couch you want to buy, you want more information. At least, that’s the theory that Pinterest’s software folks worked off of when they designed the new pins, which do just that.

Pinterest has coupled up with popular websites in order to show more information on certain pins. They write that the new pins allow you to “do more of what you love,” but what they’re really saying is that they’ve saved you the trouble of Googling that cookie recipe by providing it to you in-house.

Soon, you’re going to start seeing three new types of pins:

  • Product Pins – These are for things like clothes and furniture. Though pins can currently use price data, the new pins will also show availability and where to buy.
  • Recipe Pins – Pinterest has partnered with heavyweight (no pun intended, I swear) bloggers and websites, so you should start seeing cooking time, ingredients, and servings.
  • Movie Pins – These will now include content ratings, cast members and more.

How will you see the new and improved pins? On your feed, you’ll be able to tell when a pin has more information by the icon that appears below the picture. As a bonus, all of your old pins will be updated where applicable, as well.

Here are a list of websites Pinterest has partnered with to make “more useful pins:”

For clothes, furniture, gifts and products:

Anthropologie, Asos, BHLDN, eBay, Etsy, Free People, Home Depot, Modcloth, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Overstock, REI, Sephora, Shopify shops, Shop Terrain, Sony, Target,Urban Outfitters, Walmart, Wayfair, Zulily

For mouth-watering recipes:

101 Cookbooks, Better Homes and Gardens, Bon Appetit, Chobani, Country Living, Delish,Epicurious, Good Housekeeping, Leite’s Culinaria, Martha Stewart Living, MyRecipes,Naturally Ella, Nestlé Very Best Baking, Real Simple, Simply Recipes, Skinny Taste, The Girl Who Ate Everything, The Kitchn,What’s Gaby Cooking, Whole Foods Market, Woman’s Day

And for your favorite flicks:

Flixster, Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes

As you can see, they’ve got the bases pretty much covered.

New and improved pins for Pinterest sounds like it’s a good idea, but methinks it’s still in its infant stages. While unquestionably off to a great start, I’d like to see how the feature evolves over time, and how it will be useful to small business and up-and-comers who use Pinterest, not just the big influencers.
