There seems to be a new Trump meme every week at the moment, not that we’re complaining. Last week it was the Get Me a Coke meme, then earlier this week it was all about Putin memes, and now there’s the hilarious #TrumpGroceryStores hashtag doing the rounds on Twitter.
It all began a few days ago when Trump claimed that shoppers need ID to buy groceries. While campaigning for stronger voter ID laws, the President told supporters at the Florida State Fairground on Tuesday: “We believe that only American citizens should vote in American elections, which is why the time has come for voter ID, like everything else. Voter ID.
“You know, if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID,” he added. “You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID and you need your picture.”
You don’t need ID to buy groceries, and it wasn’t long before the bizarre comment was trending on social media. Soon, Twitter users were doing what they do best – mocking a celebrity – and #TrumpGroceryStores was born.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press Secretary, has since come to Trump’s defense, saying: “If you go to a grocery store and you buy beer or wine, you’re certainly going to show your ID.
“He’s not saying every time he went in.” She continued. “He said, ‘When you go to the grocery store.’
“I’m pretty sure that everybody in here who’s been to a grocery store that’s purchased beer or wine has probably had to show their ID. If they didn’t, then that’s probably a problem with the grocery store.”
Still, #TrumpGroceryStores lives on.
