Most of us are with the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme, the wide-eyed stalker of celebrities like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Drake. Now it seems that Laina Morris has turned her attentions (at least for now) away from celebrities to do something good for charity.
Morris, the girl behind the Overly Attached Girlfriend Meme, has launched a new YouTube Series called Dare To Share, in the hopes of raising money for a new cause. The first episode of the series was uploaded on Tuesday. In the episode, Morris explains:
“The Internet is a unifying force that brings the whole world together. We’re more connected now than we have ever been, through things like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. In today’s world, we are constantly connected. Smartphones that go everywhere we do are notifying us every second. It’s good—we can laugh together at funny videos of sneezing pandas, English brothers who bite each other’s fingers, and Overly Attached Girlfriends. And it’s bad because people can do or say whatever they want when they’re hiding behind their computer. But together, we can work to make it the most powerful method in helping others.”
So, with this in mind, the Overly Attached Girlfriend will allow viewers to dare her to do crazy things. She will then follow through as money is raised for a different charity each month. Surf Camp, an organization that works with children who have Autism, is the first charity Morris wants to help.
The commitment goal is $50,000 and users have already raised $12,404, meaning that the Overly Attached Girlfriend will need to do at least three of the four dares on her list. The list below shows all of the dares Morris will need to do for money raised to help Surf Camp:
- $1,000 — Drink a blend of five edible foods chosen by a friend, without knowing what’s in it
- $5,000 — Dance Gangnam Style in the Apple Store as a flash mob and have everyone join along
- $10,000 — Eat as much food as humanly possible and then ride the biggest rollercoaster Morris can find (note that she is deathly afraid of rollercoasters)
- $50,000 — Skydiving
The Overly Attached Girlfriend is confident that she will be able to raise $50,000 for Surf’s Up this month. Morris stated:
“I have over 100,000 followers on Twitter. I have about 200,000 followers on Facebook and subscribers on YouTube. If half of you donate a dollar—if all of you donate $0.50, it would be absolutely no problem to raise $50,000, and if we raise $50,000 that would help Surf Camp for years!”
