Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention last night practically crashed Twitter, inspiring nearly twice the number of tweets per minute as Mitt Romney’s RNC speech.
Though it’s no surprise that the Democratic Party has the market cornered on social media, the reaction to Michelle Obama’s DNC speech last night on Twitter confirmed that left-leaners dominate social media as much now as they ever have. According to Twitter, Michelle’s speech peaked at more tweets per minute (28,003) than Mitt Romney’s speech (14,239) by a big margin.
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s speech also drove social media conversation, though not as much as Romney’s RNC speech.
There are a few reasons for such social media success. One, the Obamas have been building a social media following for four-plus years, while rivals int he Romney camp have only been at it for a year at best. Second, according to a Pew study, Democrats value social media as related to politics more than Republicans or Independents do.
