The Japanese educational system has often been accused of destroying the creativity in children through forced “group mentality” exercises and an avoidance of allowing individuality.
On the other hand, you see things like this.
Some textbooks just aren’t meant for studying, it appears. They’re meant to be drawn on. And it says something about people who can look at a simple textbook illustration and think of hundreds of ways to make the picture more “unique.”
Like this one:

Or this one:

Other ones, like this, are not quite as “original.” This swan-head underwear is sold in silly costumes stores and is occasionally worn by comedians. If you want to buy your own pair, you can find it for between 1000yen and 2000yen at the Japanese shop ドンキホーテ (Don Quixote).

A common theme in these textbook sketches is taking a famous person and making them “funnier,” by adding a silly pose or awkward accessories.

Or, with a little bit of white-out, you can just draw over their face completely.

In fact, white-out seems to be a very popular tool for these drawings. It’s amazing what a little bit of imagination, white-out, and colors can do to a photo.

Another traumatic and disturbing instance of white-out and creativity is this slightly morbid drawing. You really have to wonder who comes up with these kinds of things.

And someone must have looked at this one and decided that it would make more sense to converse with a talking head.

When in doubt, you can always Anime-up a regular textbook sketch. All you need is a couple vivid colors.

There are also the “classics” like drawing an alchemy circle (or some other black magic accessory).

Or drawing someone without pants.

You don’t need to completely change the textbook, either. Sometimes the most creative textbook drawings are the ones that just add a couple extra strokes to the illustration.

Just remember, everyone sees the world differently. While some might see a boring, old texbook with simple illustrations, others view it as a chance to make some really weird art. In any case, it sure beats falling asleep on your book as you struggle to pay attention to the teacher.
