Indonesia Tsunami: Coasting Through The Remains Of A Ravaged Village

The number of people who have perished in Indonesia due to its latest tsunami has spiked to 429, and more than 1,500 others are injured.

Thousands are homeless, and at least 129 are still missing.

These are photos of the coastal village of Teluk – or to be more precise, what remains of the village. It’s spotted on Java’s western coast, the exact Indonesian shoreline that was decimated by a volcano-triggered tsunami several days ago.

The tight alleyways may have echoed with the chuckles of children. Fractured toys in the debris hint at life that once existed. Now, there is a deathlike silence.

Roughly eighteen thousand people used to call Teluk their home. Bicycles are (now) buckled and bent, walls have tumbled, and furniture has been diminished to splintered wood. Photo frames and flippers lie half buried in the mud. It’s just bad ya’ll – really, really bad.

“I had been watching the news for the past few days. There had been coverage of the volcano Anak Krakatoa so I knew there had been some activity. That night I heard it erupt, a loud roar,” said one villager.

“I even felt the ground shake. But I thought nothing of it and went to sleep. But I was woken up by neighbors shouting ‘there’s a tsunami’. I just grabbed my children and my mother and we ran!

“I’m scared of the water, I don’t want to go back. But I will have to one day. What else can I do?”
