India’s Heat Wave Melts Roads [Photos]

Heat Wave

India and heat are more often quite synonymous with each other, but this recent heat wave has put many regions on alert, and it’s not hard to see why.

An extreme heat wave is scorching India’s Andhra Pradesh and Telengana regions with temperatures that reach up to 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). The weather has gotten so hot that asphalt rods have warped and melted, and generators are shutting down from the heat overload in many establishments across cities, most critically in hospitals.

1,118 people have also died within the past month from the current weather conditions, an infernal melange of hot air, dust storms, and molten asphalt that has made almost unthinkable. BBC reports that West Bengal and Orissa have also seen at least 24 people pass away from the intense heat.

Homeless people, construction workers, street peddlers, newborns, and young children are most at risk with the current climate. Hospital personnel are kept on their toes, rushing to treat patients that have fallen victim to dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) implores people to stay indoors, wear loose clothing, and drink water—even if they’re not thirsty.

Alfred Innes , a Hyderabad resident, is concerned that many civilians have received very little help so far.”I have personally witnessed the death of a three-year-old very close to where I stay and that was because of severe hea,” he says. “It’s very sad. The government isn’t doing much, but as individuals we are trying our best.”

In the meantime, the populace is doing what it can to keep their spirits up in the heat.
