Twitter Followers Study

Do you want to gain one million Twitter followers and become internet famous in the process? A new statistical study finds that talking about yourself less and offering informative information more will help your credibility on social networks.

Conducted by researchers at Georgia Tech University the study finds that social media rewards people who are less self-expressive and more informational.

The study finds that complaining a lot on social networks or expressing negative sentiment can actually inhibit follower growth. Researchers also find that expressive positive sentiments help gain followers.

According to researcher authors Eric Gilbert and C.J. Hutto and Sarita Yardi:

“It matters what you say, and how you say it.”

Informational content does better but only when it is not broadcast without any though. The researchers found “a very strong negative effect of broadcast communication techniques during the process of network formation.”

The study also finds that Hashtags when overly used actually turn followers away. The study finds that 25 percent of a users tweets typically include hashtags.

507 Twitter users were followed for 15 months to determine how their messages affected their follower counts over the studies investigation.
