Reports are emerging stating the long anticipated Goonies sequel is a go. The film’s original director, Richard Donner, says, per TMZ, that there will be a second The Goonies movie.
Apparently Donner was signing autographs in Beverly Hills when he casually made the mention to reporters.
The Goonies (original) screenplay was written by Chris Columbus from a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg. The film features a band of teens who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon.
The premise of the movie is they are attempting to save their homes from demolition, and in doing so, discover an old Spanish map. The local lore of pirate treasure only further fuels the children to investigate the validity of the map.
This leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of famed 17th-century pirate One-Eyed Willie. But the Goonies clan encounters danger along the way as there are booby-traps and a murderous trio, the Fratellis, who catches on to what the kids are after.
The Goonies stars:
- Sean Astin as Michael “Mikey” Walsh
- Corey Feldman as Clark “Mouth” Devereaux
- Ke Huy Quan as Richard “Data” Wang
- Josh Brolin as Brandon “Brand” Walsh
- Jeff Cohen as Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen
- Kerri Green as Andrea “Andy” Carmichael
- Martha Plimpton as Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner
- John Matuszak as Lotney “Sloth” Fratelli
When asked if he hoped the film’s original stars would return, Donner responded with “Hopefully all of them.” I’m not entirely sure how that would work seeing as the original Goonies is nearly 30 years old. It was released in 1985.
The predominant teen cast of the pirate adventure movie starred actors Sean Astin, now 43, as Mikey and Josh Brolin, 46, as his older brother Brand.
The two have since gone on to act in films like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Astin) and Grindhouse: Planet Terror, American Gangster, and the upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Brolin).
Corey Feldman (Mouth) and Martha Plimpton (Stef) have continued to act as well.
The young man who played the paranoid, token heavyset kid Chunk, Jeff Cohen, graduated from UC Berkeley and became an entertainment lawyer in California.
Per IMDB, Ke Huy Quan (Data), who also starred in Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, has since gone on to work as a stunt choreographer on films like X-Men and The One.
I guess perhaps the new plot twist would have something to do with their kids if any of the original cast decided to reprise their roles.
Perhaps one of the brothers married the cheerleader love interest Andy (Kerri Green) and their children somehow fall into pirate-related peril. Either way, I’m sure many of us who remember the original movie would love to finally see a sequel.
Just remember Goonies Never Say Die!
